Old rust box sells for $226,521 on ebay!
Most people wouldn’t look twice never mind see the hidden value in the rusty, old and dented heap of metal that was recently put on ebay for auction, including the owner! The car was listed as having the original interior, but the car had no motor and no transmission, and was at first listed for $500.
But soon it was discovered that the 1963 Pontiac LeMans Tempest Super Duty Cope was one of the fastest drag cars of its era and was one of only six that were ever made, the value spiked to over $100,000 in seven minutes. At the final count, eBay seller “123ecklin” will take home $226,521 before auction fees.
The seller, who inherited the Tempest, was surprised by the car’s provenance, and was taken aback by an offer of $160,000 to end the auction early, which he rejected in order to avoid getting negative feedback on the site. The final offer was made by a buyer with the tag “ccsi2000.” Comedian Jay Leno is rumored to have been among those taking part in the bidding.
With the sorry state of Pontiac and its parent General Motors, perhaps they should consider using their proposed bailout to make more rusted-out jalopies for sale on eBay.
